As Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) pursues the acceleration of their students into the 21st-century workforce, they are seeking to drive this initiative in partnership with local businesses, organizations, and community leaders. The intent is to ensure that the workforce of Tampa’s Tomorrow will be prepared with the necessary skills today. Future leaders will be trained in state-of-the-art programs housed in high-tech, advanced facilities made available through ongoing partnerships with local, state, and national businesses and resources.
After examining the economic forecast for the Tampa Bay area along with industry certifications available and historical successes of industry certification completions, HCPS has determined the following initial programs of study as focus areas:
D.W. Waters Medical Academy (Grades 9 -12)
- Allied Health Assisting (Certified Medical Administrative Assistant Certification [CMAA])
- EKG Aide/Tech (EKG Certification)
- Home Health Aide (CMAA Certification)
- Medical Laboratory (CMAA Certification)
Bowers/Whitley Building & Construction (Grades 9 – 12)
- A/C Refrigeration, Heating Technology (HVAC) (The National Center for Construction Education & Research [NCCER] Certification)
- Building Construction
- Electricity
- Plumbing
Currently, HCPS is seeking participation from the local business community to provide input to expand on those initial focal points and seek recommendations on the following:
- Industry occupational needs
- Program development
- Facilities/equipment requirements
- Curriculum/training requirements
- Expansion and development partnerships
