Celebrating the Role of Sports in Tampa Bay: Leadership Tampa '24 Sports Day

On April 17, 2024, the Leadership Tampa Class of 2024 gathered for an insightful and engaging Sports Day, highlighting the economic and community impact of the sports industry in Tampa Bay. The event provided a day filled with learning, networking, and inspiration from some of the most influential figures in the local sports scene.

A Day Packed with Insights and Experiences

The agenda for the day was carefully planned to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the sports industry's significance in the region. Here is a glimpse into the exciting schedule:

Morning Kickoff at the AdventHealth Training Center

The day began early at the AdventHealth Training Center, where participants boarded a bus to the AMALIE Arena. After a warm welcome and introductions by Terrie Daniel, LT'20 Class Chair, and Day Chairs Lakisha Sharpe (LT’22) and Amy Weber (LT’23), the group headed to their first destination.

Exclusive Access and Leadership Talks at AMALIE Arena

Upon arrival at the AMALIE Arena, the class enjoyed breakfast while listening to a welcome address by Lakisha Sharpe, followed by an inspiring talk from Steve Griggs, CEO of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Vinik Sports Group. The class then gained insights into the leadership and economic impact of sports and entertainment from notable speakers, including:

  • Travis Pelleymounter, SVP of Ticket Sales and Service
  • Derrick Brooks, EVP of Corporate & Community Development
  • Elizabeth Frazier, EVP of Community
  • Kevin Preast, Chief Venue Officer

A tour of the AMALIE Arena and a chance to watch the Tampa Bay Lightning's morning skate rounded out the ‘cool’ morning activities.

Midday Business Overview at the Waters Training Facility

Next, the group visited the Waters Training Facility for an overview of the business operations of the Tampa Bay Rays and Tampa Bay Rowdies, presented by:

  • Bill Walsh, Chief Business Officer – Rays
  • Ryan Helfrick, President – Rowdies

 A fantastic and insightful leadership presentation by Rowdies Head Coach Robbie Neilson followed, along with a tour of the facility.

Afternoon Session at the AdventHealth Training Center

 After lunch back at the AdventHealth Training Center, the participants enjoyed a tour of the indoor training facility and the Buccaneers locker room. The class was welcomed by Brian Ford, COO, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The afternoon featured a session on "Preparation Meets Opportunity" with speakers, from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, including:

  • Dave Hamilton, Director of Performance Science
  • Jess Pastuf, Director of Performance Nutrition
  • Keith Tandy, Defensive/Special Teams Assistant/Former Bucs player
  • Duke Preston, Vice President of Player Engagement

 The day concluded with closing remarks and an optional tour of the Buccaneers' locker room.

Spotlight on Distinguished Servant Leaders

In a day that was filled with Leaders and Sports Executives, our day chairs delivered an educational, exciting, and memorable day. The day celebrated the dynamic sports culture that makes Tampa Bay a vibrant and thriving community!

  • Lakisha Sharpe, Sr. Director of Season Ticket Membership at Vinik Sports Group, oversees the sales and service of season ticket memberships and leads the DEI Council.
  • Amy Weber, Senior Director of Ticket Operations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, manages the team's ticketing database and has been part of the NFL's select staff for six Super Bowls.

A Day to Remember

Leadership Tampa '24 Sports Day was an unforgettable experience, offering participants a deeper understanding of the sports industry's vital role in Tampa Bay. Through engaging presentations, behind-the-scenes tours, and valuable networking opportunities, this event underscored the power of sports to drive economic growth and foster community spirit.
