From Tech to Tactics: Leadership Tampa’s Immersive Military Day Experience

Leadership Tampa’s Military Day offered LT’25 Cohort members a rare and unparalleled glimpse into the inner workings of our nation’s elite defense operations. The day was split between SOFWERX, an innovation hub located in the heart of Tampa, and MacDill Air Force Base, home to some of the most strategic military operations planning and training in the world. With the privilege of direct access to personnel, cutting-edge technology, and a behind-the-scenes look at national defense efforts, the Class of 2025 walked away with a newfound appreciation for the critical role these organizations play in both national security and the Tampa Bay community.

Innovation in Action: SOFWERX and the “Speed of SOF”

The day began with a visit to SOFWERX, a collaborative space designed funded by United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) to foster innovation by bridging the gap between special operations forces, industry leaders, creatives, engineers, and academia. Unlike MacDill AFB, SOFWERX is intentionally located outside of the base to facilitate easier access for non-government thought leaders to contribute their expertise, ensuring the military gets the best available technology as quickly as possible.

The SOFWERX team emphasized how their model has significantly accelerated the timeline for getting technology to the warfighter—from two years to as little as five to six months. This rapid acceleration from concept to capability, known as the “Speed of SOF,” ensures that cutting-edge technology is delivered while it is still relevant and needed. To help foster the introduction of new ideas, SOFWERX hosts a Tech Tuesday Pitch Day, where entrepreneurs and innovators have the opportunity to present their ideas, products, and services directly to decision-makers who can integrate them into military operations. Additionally, SOFWERX is committed to investing in the next generation of innovators, having provided internships to 220 students to date, many from the Florida universities and colleges. In partnership with USSOCOM, SOFWERX also funds STEM programs in schools from elementary through high school across the region, further strengthening the future pipeline of talent into national security innovation.

The Power of Aerial Dominance: KC-135 Stratotanker Tour and Maintenance Operations

Upon arriving at MacDill, we were welcomed by members of Team MacDill, who provided an orientation on the base’s mission and significance. One of the most captivating moments of the day was the up-close experience with the KC-135 Stratotanker, the workhorse of U.S. military aerial refueling. Standing beneath its massive wings, we gained a deeper understanding of how this aircraft extends the reach of U.S. and allied forces across the globe. The tour reinforced a crucial theme of the day—precision, teamwork, and logistical mastery are at the core of military success.

Following this, we visited the 6th Air Mobility Wing's Non-Destructive Inspection Shop, where we learned how the U.S. Air Force (USAF) conducts preventive maintenance on its aircraft. These Airmen are trained to identify various defects in aircraft parts, serving as the 'general practitioners' of the USAF. They diagnose issues, perform rapid repairs when possible, and send more complex problems to specialized teams for further resolution.

Advancing Air Force Readiness: MTECH and the 927th Air Refueling Wing

Next, we visited the MTECH unit, where USAF Airmen serve as the critical link between flight line maintainers and engineers. We toured their facility and gained insight into the cutting-edge technology and tools they use to ensure that America's Air Force remains mission ready. Their innovative approach to maintenance and repair plays a vital role in keeping aircraft operational and extending their longevity.

Following our MTECH visit, we assembled for a briefing with the 927th Air Refueling Wing, one of 34 mission partners based at MacDill AFB. We learned about their dual mission of Air Refueling and Aero Medical Operations, which are essential to global mobility and combat support. It was eye-opening to discover that 75% of the members of the 927th serve part-time as Reservists, balancing military service with civilian careers while ensuring that the 24 aircraft stationed at MacDill remain in the air and flight ready. Our cohort left with a deeper appreciation of the indispensable role that Reservists play in military readiness.

We also learned about the bright future of the 927th, as they are slated to receive multiple KC-46 Pegasus aircraft beginning in 2026, further enhancing their refueling capabilities and mission effectiveness.

A Visit to the 24th Rapid Deployment Squadron and Remembering Tech Sgt. Richard Padilla

Before lunch, we had the opportunity to visit the 24th Rapid Deployment Squadron (RDS), also known as "D-Cell," an Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) component. The primary role of the RDS is to “bare base”, meaning they specialize in rapidly transforming austere locations into fully operational bases. We toured their facility, gaining insight into the innovative use of shipping containers—not only for transporting critical supplies and weapons but also for converting them into offices, lodging, and shower facilities in challenging environments.

Our tour also included a fascinating look at some of the weapons systems utilized downrange. One of the highlights of the visit was our interaction with Tech Sgt. Richard Padilla, who quickly became a class favorite due to his engaging personality, willingness to answer questions, and sense of humor. Tragically, less than two weeks after our visit, Tech Sgt. Padilla was killed in a hit-and-run accident. Our immense condolences go out to his loved ones. We are deeply grateful to have met him, learned from him, and to honor his service to our nation.

Connecting Over Lunch: Honoring Service and Sacrifice

As the morning wound down, we were treated to a wonderful experience over lunch, where we had the privilege of sharing a meal with active-duty service members from multiple branches of service. This unique opportunity allowed us to hear their personal stories, understand what inspired them to raise their right hand in service to our nation, and gain a deeper appreciation for the challenges and triumphs of military life. Engaging in candid conversations about their experiences provided invaluable insight into the sacrifices they make and the resilience they embody every day.

Leadership Lessons from Special Operations Forces

Following lunch, a highlight of the day was our visit to U.S. Special Operations Command. Upon arrival, LT ’25 members were provided an insightful overview of the rich history of USSOCOM, which has shaped the role of Special Operations Forces in modern warfare. Understanding its evolution reinforced the significance of adaptability, innovation, and strategic execution in the military's highest-stakes missions.

Our visit was made even more extraordinary by a surprise visit from General Bryan Fenton, Commanding General of U.S. Special Operations Command, and Command Sergeant Major Shane Shorter, Senior Enlisted Advisor of U.S. Special Operations Command. These two top leaders of America’s Special Operations Forces took time from their demanding schedules to personally address our class. They provided valuable insight into USSOCOM’s global efforts, sharing firsthand, non-classified accounts of the complex, high-stakes operations being conducted around the world. Their discussion emphasized the critical importance of the civilian-military relationship, highlighting how collaboration between military personnel and the civilian sector strengthens national security and enhances community support.

The opportunity to hear directly from GEN Fenton and CSM Shorter was both humbling and inspiring. Their leadership, vision, and dedication to service left a lasting impression on our cohort, and we are immensely grateful for their time and willingness to share their expertise. Their presence at our briefing underscored the impact of strong, mission-driven leadership and the unwavering commitment of those who serve our country at the highest levels.

U.S. Central Command: The Intersection of Diplomacy and Defense

The briefing from a U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) officer shed light on the broader geopolitical role that the strategic planning and training occurring at MacDill plays on the world stage. We learned about the delicate balance of military strategy, intelligence, and diplomacy in maintaining regional stability. Hearing directly from CENTCOM underscored the complexities of managing global security challenges and reinforced the importance of collaboration at every level of leadership.

Final Reflections

Leadership Tampa’s Military Day was far more than an educational tour—it was an immersive leadership experience. The exposure to MacDill’s missions, personnel, and operations provided lessons that extend well beyond the military. Whether in business, public service, or community leadership, the principles of teamwork, innovation, and resilience stand as pillars for success.

As we boarded the bus for the final time, it was clear that this experience had left a lasting impression. The men and women of MacDill Air Force Base and SOFWERX operate with unwavering dedication, ensuring that our nation remains secure while fostering strong ties with the Tampa Bay community.

A heartfelt thank you to our hosts, speakers, and the Leadership Tampa Military Day organizers for an unforgettable experience. Our class left with a deeper understanding and respect for the sacrifices made by our military personnel and a renewed commitment to applying these invaluable leadership lessons in our own personal and professional journeys.
