Tampa Bay's business leaders are uniting to advocate for a transformative regional transit solution: a permanent Cross-Bay Ferry service. In a recent op-ed, Edwin Narain, Bob Rohrlack, Owen LaFave, and Chris Steinocher—representing the Tampa Bay Chamber and St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce—urge the transfer of a $4.86 million federal grant from Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) to the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) to fund this initiative.
The business community emphasizes that reliable, multimodal transportation is essential for economic growth, workforce mobility, and regional competitiveness. The ferry isn't merely a convenience but a critical infrastructure investment that addresses traffic congestion, environmental concerns, and commuter accessibility. Seasonal pilot programs have already demonstrated strong public demand, indicating the viability of a year-round service.
With the federal grant nearing expiration, the call to action is clear: regional leaders must collaborate to secure these funds and implement a lasting ferry system. Such a move promises to enhance connectivity between Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, support local businesses, and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable Tampa Bay economy.
The PSTA Board of Directors will meet on May 28th to vote on the approval of the transfer of the FTA ferry boat grants from HART to PSTA.
