How Vanessa Alcala and TheraVolve Wellness Co. Empower Tampa Bay Through Speech, Social-Emotional Growth, and Public Speaking
A Journey Rooted in Resilience

When the world shut down in 2020, Vanessa Alcala faced a crossroads of personal and professional challenges. As a bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) and pregnant frontline healthcare worker, she spent her days treating patients in a COVID unit and her evenings protecting the health of her growing family. Those months brought more than heightened safety protocols. They brought clarity. She witnessed how communication and connection became lifelines for patients and families and how isolation could quietly limit a person’s ability to express needs or feelings. The experience confirmed that strengthening communication is not only a clinical necessity but a human right, and it inspired the vision for TheraVolve Wellness Co.

Launching a Practice During a Pandemic

Starting a private practice during a global crisis might have seemed daunting, but for Vanessa it became a calling. She imagined a clinic that would reach beyond traditional speech therapy, offering children, adults, and families holistic support for speech, language, swallowing, and professional communication. TheraVolve opened with a mission to provide evidence-based care delivered through a whole-person approach that respects culture, language, and emotional well-being. The practice was built on the understanding that communication is more than mechanics; it is the foundation of self-expression, leadership, and meaningful relationships.

A Season of Growth and New Life

The years that followed were filled with milestones. Vanessa was recognized with the ACE Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and named an ASHA Distinguished Early Career Professional, honors that highlighted her dedication to advancing the field of speech-language pathology. Most recently, she celebrated the birth of her second child, Emmie, just eight months ago and received Silver for Best of the Best Speech-Language Pathologist by the Tampa Bay Times. Balancing motherhood, entrepreneurship, and these achievements has deepened her perspective on the importance of connection, presence, and emotional regulation. These experiences now guide the way TheraVolve serves its clients, blending professional expertise with empathy and an appreciation for life’s quieter challenges.

Celebrating a Calming, Wellness-Inspired Space

On September 12th, Vanessa and her team celebrated the grand opening of TheraVolve’s newly expanded clinic in Carrollwood with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by families, community partners, and chamber members. The large, wellness-inspired space was designed to reflect the practice’s commitment to whole-person care. Soft, calming colors and thoughtful design choices promote regulation and create an atmosphere where every visitor feels safe, respected, and at ease. From the clinic’s windows, guests can even enjoy a serene view of the Carrollwood Golf Course—a peaceful reminder that healing and growth are best supported in environments that nourish both body and mind. This blend of thoughtful design and natural beauty creates a backdrop that makes each visit to the clinic both grounding and uplifting.

The Power of Social-Emotional Skills

Central to TheraVolve’s philosophy is the understanding that social-emotional skills are as essential as verbal skills. Communication is not merely the exchange of words; it is the ability to connect, empathize, and lead with confidence. Children who develop strong social-emotional foundations gain tools for academic success and positive peer relationships. Adults who strengthen these skills are better equipped to navigate workplace challenges, present ideas clearly, and manage stress in high-pressure situations. Each service at TheraVolve integrates strategies for self-awareness, stress management, and resilience so that clients leave with tools that extend far beyond the therapy room.

A Real-Life Example of Holistic Growth

One client story highlights the depth of this approach. A female executive initially sought help for accent reduction to improve clarity during corporate presentations. As sessions progressed, it became clear that pronunciation was only part of the challenge. Together, the focus expanded to include public speaking coaching, social-emotional reflection, and stress management. Through this comprehensive work she strengthened her ability to speak with confidence, perform under pressure, and pursue new professional opportunities, ultimately earning a place in an elite corporate mentoring program and a promotion. Her journey reflects the broader mission of TheraVolve: when communication skills grow, opportunities expand in every area of life.

Services for Children, Adults, and Organizations

TheraVolve offers a full range of services for children, adults, and families. Pediatric therapy addresses speech and language development, articulation, stuttering, and communication delays, helping children build the foundation for lifelong learning and confidence. Adult services include therapy for speech, language, and swallowing needs, as well as accent modification and cognitive-communication support. For professionals and teams, TheraVolve provides public speaking workshops and one-on-one coaching to enhance clarity, presence, and interpersonal skills. Workshops cover speech projection and clarity, strategies to manage anxiety in high-stakes situations, breathing and vocal hygiene techniques for healthy voices, and social-emotional reflection to align communication style with personal and professional goals. Organizations across Tampa Bay partner with TheraVolve to help employees develop these essential skills, recognizing that confident communication drives innovation, leadership, and team cohesion.

Creating a Space Where Everyone Feels Welcome

TheraVolve is designed for individuals and families who may carry heavy responsibilities or who are used to relying on their own strength. Some arrive after quietly managing communication challenges for years. The clinic’s private, respectful environment allows each person to work on goals without the worry of being defined by them. The process emphasizes capability and growth, encouraging clients to view therapy not as a limitation but as an investment in their own success. By focusing on collaboration and self-directed progress, Vanessa and her team ensure that every client retains a sense of agency and confidence throughout their journey.

Commitment to Community and Minority-Owned Business Growth

Vanessa’s impact extends well beyond the clinic. As a participant in the Access Tampa Bay program, a Tampa Bay Chamber initiative that empowers minority-owned businesses, she engages in mentorship, resource sharing, and networking to strengthen both her practice and the broader community. This partnership supports her mission to create opportunities for families and professionals across diverse backgrounds and to ensure that inclusive healthcare and communication services are accessible to all.

Championing Women and Emerging Leaders

Vanessa also contributes to the Hispanic Professional Women’s Association (HPWA), where she has mentored aspiring professionals and speaks at events that highlight perseverance, leadership, and the power of authentic communication. Her involvement with HPWA reflects a deep commitment to supporting other women, especially those navigating first-generation or minority-owned business journeys. Through mentorship programs, networking events, and educational presentations, she shares practical strategies for building confidence and using communication as a tool for advancement.

Sip & Social: Building Community Through Connection

In addition to her clinical and coaching work, Vanessa co-founded Sip & Social, a national networking community for women in healthcare. What began as a local gathering has grown into a vibrant network hosting events in Tampa and beyond, including meetups at national conferences such as ASHA. Sip & Social provides a welcoming space where women can share experiences, learn from one another, and build lasting professional relationships. The initiative reflects the same values that guide TheraVolve: authentic connection, mutual support, and the belief that strong communication strengthens every community.

Holistic Care Across the Lifespan

TheraVolve serves clients across all stages of life, from toddlers learning their first words to retirees regaining speech after medical events to professionals refining their leadership presence. What unites them is the clinic’s whole-person, bilingual approach. Services address not only the mechanics of speech and swallowing but also the emotional and cultural factors that shape communication. Each client receives care that respects individuality and empowers them to meet personal and professional goals.

Expanding Beyond Speech Services

Looking ahead, TheraVolve is preparing to expand into additional disciplines such as occupational therapy, physical therapy, and other wellness-based services. This next phase will allow the clinic to provide truly comprehensive support under one roof, creating seamless care plans for children, adults, and families. The vision is to offer an integrated model where speech therapy, social-emotional development, physical well-being, and holistic wellness all work together to help clients thrive.

The Heart of TheraVolve

At the center of every success story is a commitment to preserving each client’s sense of self. Therapy is approached as a partnership that recognizes personal strengths and life experience. Rather than focusing on deficits, the team works alongside clients to identify goals and build skills that reinforce independence and confidence. This philosophy allows individuals to pursue growth without feeling diminished and to leave sessions with a renewed understanding of their own capability.

Looking Ahead

With the Carrollwood expansion now open and celebrated, Vanessa is focused on growing TheraVolve’s services and community partnerships. Plans include additional workshops, bilingual community programs, and technology to enhance therapy outcomes, along with the upcoming integration of new disciplines. The goal remains clear: to create a space where speech therapy, social-emotional development, and interdisciplinary wellness come together to empower children, adults, and families throughout Tampa Bay.

An Invitation to the Community

Whether seeking therapy for a child’s speech delay, an adult swallowing disorder, or communication training for a professional team, individuals and organizations across Tampa Bay can find support at TheraVolve Wellness Co. Through personalized care, social-emotional guidance, and practical communication strategies, Vanessa and her team help clients discover their voice and use it with confidence.
