The day began before sunrise as the Leadership Tampa Class of 2026 boarded a bus for the four-hour ride from Tampa to Tallahassee. The long trek offered a chance to connect, review the day’s agenda, and gear up for a full schedule ahead. Midway through the trip, the group made a much-needed stop at the iconic Busy Bee in Live Oak, Florida. A welcome break that brought caffeine, snacks, and plenty of laughs before rolling into the state capital.
The Leadership Tampa Class of 2026 began its Tallahassee program with a dynamic and candid lobbying legislative session hosted by Melanie Brown. She brought together an exceptional panel of policy experts: Jan Gorrie, Darrick McGhee, Matthew Blair, and Seth McKeel. Each panelist offered deep experience navigating Florida’s political landscape and shared real-world insights into how legislation takes shape long before it reaches a committee room.
Melanie led the conversation with targeted questions about the current political climate, legislative priorities, and effective advocacy strategies. The Leadership Tampa class then joined in, asking thoughtful questions about shaping policy, engaging lawmakers, and representing the region’s interests. This interactive discussion set the tone for the rest of the day—informative, engaging, and centered on real impact.
Exploring Florida’s Legislative and Judicial Landscape
Following the panel, the class moved through the Florida Capitol Complex to gain a firsthand understanding of how state governance operates.
Understanding the Judicial Branch at the Florida Supreme Court
The class also visited the Florida Supreme Court, where the tone shifted from political negotiation to constitutional interpretation. Court staff walked participants through the Court’s role in evaluating legal challenges, upholding the Florida Constitution, and setting precedents that influence statewide policy.
Standing in the Supreme Court chamber served as a powerful reminder that leadership demands an understanding of not only how laws are crafted, but also how they are interpreted and enforced.

The group’s next stop was the Florida Senate, where staff and policy advisors provided insight into the chamber’s culture, processes, and current legislative priorities. Participants learned about the Senate’s more deliberative pace, the nuances of budget negotiation, and the key issues expected to shape the remainder of the legislative session.

Advocacy in Action: Meeting with State Representatives
In the afternoon, Leadership Tampa participants split into small groups for meetings with various Florida House Representatives. These meetings focused on the Tampa Bay Chamber’s legislative and funding priorities, including:
- Property Tax reductions or Repeals and how that loss of revenue will affect services in the counties of Tampa Bay
- How to provide affordable childcare for the people of Tampa Bay who now currently have to choose between having a career and caring for their children during the day. The conversations were substantive and collaborative, allowing participants to both advocate for Tampa Bay and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges lawmakers face. For many, these conversations underscored the importance of consistent, informed advocacy at the state level.
A Memorable Moment: Recognized on the House Floor
The final stop of the day brought the class to the Florida House of Representatives. During the session, Representative Susan Valdes formally welcomed the Leadership Tampa Class of 2026, offering public recognition from the chamber floor. It was a meaningful moment—one that highlighted the importance of developing informed civic and business leaders across the state.
This visit also gave participants a close look at the intensity and structure of House proceedings, from debate and amendments to the procedural rules that keep the legislative process moving.
Why the Tallahassee Experience Matters
The day’s activities reinforced Leadership Tampa’s core mission: to build informed, engaged leaders who understand the systems shaping the region. Participants left with:
- A clearer view of how state policy impacts Tampa Bay
- Stronger relationships with state leaders and policymakers
- A more nuanced understanding of the legislative and judicial processes
- Greater confidence in advocating for community and business priorities
- Finding out who among our classmates can sing and who can not
This experience equips the Leadership Tampa Class of 2026 to contribute more effectively to regional progress—and to champion the issues that matter most to Tampa Bay.
Looking Ahead
As the legislative session continues, Leadership Tampa participants will carry forward the insights gained in Tallahassee—advocating for meaningful outcomes, supporting the Chamber’s priorities, and strengthening Tampa Bay through informed leadership.
The visit wasn’t just educational; it was empowering. It reinforced that leadership is active, engaged, and rooted in service to the broader community.
