Founder & Executive Director – Housing and Education Alliance, Inc.

Sylvia A. Alvarez is the Founder and Executive Director of the Housing and Education Alliance (HEA), a HUD-approved counseling agency that has empowered more than 56,000 Tampa Bay residents since 2002. Under her leadership, HEA has delivered over 502,000 hours of housing education and counseling, facilitated $161 million in loans and down payment assistance, 12,000 home purchased till date and supported nearly 14,000 families through the foreclosure crisis—achievements that have earned both state and national recognition.

She is the co-author of The American Nightmare: Strategies for Preventing,
Surviving, and Overcoming Foreclosure, a book endorsed by Freddie Mac and widely used by HUD counselors across the country. During the housing crisis, Sylvia’s resilience and determination guided HEA through near closure, inspiring her team to persevere despite daunting challenges and transforming HEA into a nationally recognized nonprofit. The organization has since received numerous honors, including PBS-WEDU Nonprofit of the Year and UnidosUS Southeast Regional Affiliate of the Year (2024).

A nationally respected housing advocate, Sylvia has served on advisory boards for JPMorgan Chase, UnidosUS, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and continues to contribute to several national advisory boards. Recognized by The White House for her thought leadership, she remains a passionate champion of homeownership, drawing inspiration from her immigrant family’s journey. In addition to being a CFPB appointee, bilingual spokesperson, HUD-certified housing counselor (NMLS #1850798), and licensed realtor, Sylvia is most proud of her role as a devoted mother and grandmother.
